Everything you need to know about SynthCounsel. Take the 60-second wizard if you want a personalized starting point.
What is SynthCounsel?
SynthCounsel is a privacy-first legal document preparation tool. We help pro se litigants, solo attorneys, and paralegals generate court-compliant documents — motions, discovery requests, answers, certificates of service, and more — formatted to your jurisdiction's rules.
Is SynthCounsel a law firm?
No. SynthCounsel is a document preparation platform (scrivener). We do not provide legal advice, represent you in court, or create an attorney-client relationship. We recommend having a licensed attorney review any documents before filing.
Which states does SynthCounsel support?
We currently support all 50 U.S. states and federal courts. Each jurisdiction has its own rule engine for deadlines, formatting requirements, and procedural rules. Coverage depth varies — Utah, California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Arizona have the most comprehensive rule sets.
How is my data protected?
SynthCounsel collects zero telemetry. Your documents, case details, and conversations are never used for AI training, sold to third parties, or shared with anyone. We don't run analytics. Your legal matters stay private.
What types of documents can I generate?
SynthCounsel generates motions (dismiss, summary judgment, compel, protective order, strike, default judgment, amend, extension of time), answers to complaints with affirmative defenses, discovery requests (interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admission), certificates of service, and counterclaims.
Are the documents formatted for my court?
Yes. Documents are formatted according to your jurisdiction's rules of civil procedure — margins, fonts, caption format, word count certification, and required headers. You select your state and court, and SynthCounsel applies the right formatting.
What is the deadline calculator?
Our Rule 6 deadline engine computes filing deadlines based on your jurisdiction's civil procedure rules. It accounts for service method extensions, weekends, court holidays, and applies a conservative 3-business-day safety buffer. You'll never miss a filing date.
What is the violation scanner?
Upload a letter from a debt collector and our scanner checks it against FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) and FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) requirements. It identifies potential violations with statute citations and suggested remedies.
Can I use the AI assistant for legal questions?
Yes. The AI assistant ("Counsel") can look up rules, explain legal concepts in plain English, and cite specific statutes. It provides verbatim legal text with citations. It does not give legal advice or recommend which arguments to make — those decisions are yours.
Is there a free tier?
Yes. The free tier includes up to 10 cases, 20 documents per month, the deadline calculator, basic templates, and AI assistant access. No credit card required.
What does Pro include?
Pro ($29/month) gives you unlimited cases, unlimited documents, all document templates, priority deadline alerts, document version history, and email support.
Can I pay per document instead?
Yes. If you don't need a subscription, you can pay $4.99 per document with no monthly commitment.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. No contracts, no cancellation fees. You can downgrade to the free tier at any time and keep access to your existing cases and documents.
I'm representing myself in court. Can SynthCounsel help?
That's exactly who we built this for. SynthCounsel formats your documents so the court takes them seriously — proper captions, correct margins, rule-compliant formatting, and accurate deadlines. You focus on your arguments; we handle the formatting.
I received a debt collection lawsuit. Where do I start?
Start by creating a case with your court details, then use the Answer to Complaint generator. It walks you through selecting applicable affirmative defenses and formats your response to your jurisdiction's rules. You can also use the violation scanner on any collector correspondence.
Do I still need a lawyer?
We always recommend consulting with a licensed attorney when possible. SynthCounsel handles document formatting and deadline calculation — the procedural side. An attorney can evaluate the merits of your case and advise on strategy. Many legal aid organizations offer free consultations.
