Do I have to file a Notice of Appearance?

Not always. In most state courts, filing your Answer or Motion automatically establishes you as the appearing party — the Notice is courtesy. But some federal courts and some specialized state courts (probate, family, federal MDL) require a formal Notice of Appearance before they will docket your other filings. When in doubt, file one.

Why does the address matter so much?

Service of process is jurisdictional. If a motion is mailed to your address and you didn't see it, you are still legally on notice — court orders entered after service still bind you. Use an address you actually check daily. PO Boxes work but courts may push back; a street address is preferred. Update the court immediately if your address changes.

Should I consent to electronic service?

Almost always yes. Email service is faster, cheaper, and more reliable than mail. The risk: service is complete on the moment of email transmission, so if your spam filter eats a motion, you are still on notice. Mitigate by whitelisting opposing counsel and the court email domains, and check your spam folder daily during active litigation.

Can I appear pro se mid-case after starting with a lawyer?

Yes — file a Notice of Substitution (your lawyer to you, pro se) plus this Notice of Appearance. Some courts also require a Withdrawal of Counsel motion that the prior attorney files. Speak to your prior attorney about the cleanest substitution path; many will file a joint stipulation.

Is appearing pro se a bad idea?

Sometimes. Pro-se litigants are bound by the same procedural rules as represented parties (28 USC § 1654), and small mistakes (missed deadlines, wrong service, wrong cause of action pleading) lose cases. For high-stakes matters (significant assets in bankruptcy, child custody, criminal charges, business exposure), hire a lawyer. For standard debt-collection defense and many landlord-tenant cases, pro-se appearance is well-trodden.
